Carpal Tunnel

Carpal tunnel syndrome is so prevalent in the United States that the National Center for Health Statistics estimates a whopping 260,000 carpal tunnel release surgeries are performed each year. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused by excess pressure on the median nerve, which is a nerve that runs down your forearm and controls you thumb and first three fingers. As excess pressure build up, you may experience tingling sensations, general pain of the hand and wrist or numbness in your fingers. The pain you feel can vary from an occasional tingling to a constant and throbbing pain that makes your normal activities impossible to complete.

There are many causes that can result in carpal tunnel syndrome, including but not limited to, repetitive hand movements, arthritis, pregnancy and hand or wrist injury. Work-related carpal tunnel often develops in people who work in manual labor or office jobs where they have to type on a keyboard or manage industrial equipment all day. Depending on your pain severity, your carpal tunnel syndrome may be treatable through physical therapy or modifying the ergonomics of the space you work at.

If you are someone who suffers from severe and painful carpal tunnel syndrome, your treatment may be a bit more extensive. At Premier Medical one of our pain management specialists can examine your pain severity from your carpal tunnel syndrome and recommend an effective treatment plan that’s right for you. The following list describes some of the pain management techniques we offer:

  • Heat and Cold treatments– (for mild to moderate pains) this can reduce inflammation around the median nerve
  • Hand splints or braces—(for serious pain) this immobilizes the hand, which allows the median nerve inflammation to relieve itself
  • Anti-inflammatory medication—(for mild to moderate pains) this can reduce inflammation and swelling in the nerves and relieve pain
  • Carpal Tunnel Release surgery—(for severe pain) this is the most invasive option and at Premier Medical we try to avoid this at all costs. This option relieves the median nerve pressure through surgery.

At Premier Medical we strive to relieve our patient’s carpal tunnel syndrome through pain management treatments that are non-invasive and non-surgical. If you are at a point where you’re contemplating carpal tunnel surgery, contact one of our pain management specialists today and set up a free consultation.
